Angel Co-Op Newsletter

Dear Sister,

It is dark in my kitchen as I type this-- I reluctantly flip on the overhead light to spare my eyes since I rather enjoy the peaceful-early-Sunday- morning-overcast quality of the light.  I trained yesterday and rain is forecast for today as well.  What a pity that our garden space has not yet been worked or planted.... I guess we are the "grasshoppers" of our community, because I have seen and heard several of our neighbours out putting in gardens.  Ed has been away running his half-marathon and golfing with his brother, and I have been twisting myself into knots  (double right brain lead that I am) attempting to finish up the volunteer roster for next week's Canadian Association of Social Workers national conference here in Saskatoon.  Sometime after the Conference we will revisit the garden idea.

Finding Waldo: When I became an Adventist, back in the early 90s, I watched  a series of videos to gain a quickie understanding of Adventist history.  Most fascinating to me was the story of the Waldensians in the valleys of the Italian Alps who were hunted down and killed by three hundred years of persecutors.  This dedicated band of Christians worshiped on the Sabbath, and studied the Bible together at a time when the only Bibles were chained in Monasteries for the use of the privileged few who could read.  They vigorously defended their faith, hiding in caves to worship, and secreting the Word in fresh-baked loaves of bread that they delivered to their hungry neighbours.

Harold Burden, one of our CHIP trainers, emails that this coming week Dr. George and Dena Guthrie leave for a three-week itinerary in Europe with health lectures in Rome and in the Waldensian Valleys as part of a health-training seminar.  Dena was also one of our trainers in Saskatoon.  You can read her testimonial by clicking on Trapped In A Vacation

Women's Ministries Day of Emphasis (this coming Sabbath at SDA Churches across North America) Our Church (Saskatoon Central) will be having a day set aside to honour and acknowledge women who have experienced abuse, and to look at how the faith community can prevent, protect, and promote healing of women and children. We will have a candlelit vigil for all committed and compassionate persons to participate in. In the afternoon, after our fellowship lunch, we will have a facilitated screening of the excellent video "Broken Vows: Religious Perspectives on Domestic Abuse."  All adults will be invited to this screening, with child care available.  Go to the Faith Trust site to check out this and other related videos: http://www.faithtrustinstitute.org/index.html

Please share with us what your WM committee is doing for Day of Emphasis.  We'll have a review of the events in a future newsletter.  CONTACT US

Yesterday I met the very lovely new (?) girlfriend of one of our adopted Kenyan sons.  Eliud was visiting Saskatoon to attend the graduation of his Kenyan "little brother" Josiah-- Josiah's parents traveled all the way from Kenya to attend, as well.  Eliud is studying for a PhD in bio-chemistry at the University of Calgary.  Carolyn is completing work for an MA in English literature, particularly looking at contemporary Canadian children's literature and how Aboriginals are portrayed. This is so fascinating to me-- I will be sure to pass on whatever information is forthcoming.  Eliud is a fine young man and Carolyn seems a good match.

We spoke to our son Phil (via Instant Messenger) last night and heard about his recent week spent on the island of Capul with his fiancée Malyn and her family.  They traveled from Manila to Malyn's family home to ask the parents' blessing on their upcoming marriage.  Besides seeing family, they connected with some of Malyn's long-time friends, checked out bat caves, ate succulent young coconuts (buko), and Phil saw a snake or two.  On the way back in the motorboat they got thoroughly drenched.  Phil says that Capul is a very beautiful island.  I would expect that, since my future daughter-in-law has all the signs of having come from somewhere soul-nurturing and beautiful.  We feel so blessed.
