Hello dear Sister!

This is an orange and red and golden time again in Saskatoon. Fall is here, and with it come reflections on the fleeting of time. It is a bitter-sweet time of year for me. I met my husband in the Fall of 1969 during my first year at College. In my young adulthood I enjoyed packing our sons off to school, seeing their enthusiasm at the beginning of a new school year, and anticipating successes and happiness. September marked a New Year of sorts. Then there was that huge chasm called "the Empty Nest".... the 'kids' were grown and the school years were over. I am so thankful that God has given me a playful, loving mate who has stuck through the loss and sadness. Tonight we had a late Sabbath walk by the river's edge. I want to share a picture of this sweet guy that also showcases some of our fall colours here in Saskatoon:

This was a particularly shocking week for us in that first we received word of my Uncle Harvey's passing (at age 84) and then Ed phoned me at work to read an obituary telling of the death of our friend Leo, who had turned 50 at the end of July. We truly do not know the hour!

Here are some "spiritual nourishment" tips that I received in an e-mail (by Renee Miller of 'Signposts'):

Caring for our spiritual lives does require a measure of time and a dose of priority, but it only takes a simple practice, not heroic effort, in order to safeguard our souls. Try any of these:

Awake with a prayer on your lips and speak to God when you close your eyes in slumber.

Go to a church to give your soul companionship with a spiritual community.

Write a letter to God every day.

Spend 30 minutes every day in nature and find yourself in God's presence there.

A practice lived with regularity will not only keep your spiritual life in balance, you'll also find you will feel the tenderness of God and hear the whisper of heaven.

O God, let me find my rest in you.

I hope you have been enjoying the daily devotionals taken from "Fearfully and Wonderfully Made" by Dr. Paul Brand and Philip Yancey. I will be discontinuing them very soon, but invite you to read the complete book. You can order it from Amazon.ca or the Christian Books store. Both venues offer you a good bargain (and the opportunity to support our Women's Ministries in with your purchase).

I have just recently purchased "The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?" by Rick Warren. The book is described as "more than a book; it is a guide to a 40-day spiritual journey that will enable you to discover the answer to life's most important question: What on earth am I here for? By the end of this journey you will know God's purpose for your life and will understand the big picture-- how all the pieces fit together. Having this perspective will reduce your stress, simplify your decisions, increase your satisfaction, and most important, prepare you for eternity." I can hardly wait to turn the pages and begin, but I want to give you the chance to journey with me. Megan and I will provide a 'journaling page' where we can post our break-throughs, thoughts, and impressions. I will not be sending a daily email, but invite you to purchase this book from Christianbooks (where you can read an excerpt)-- just click from our site to make your selection (and our Women's Ministries is supported). I may be able to acquire a number of books at a discount rate (CAD$15 including postage), so please let me know immediately at angelco_op@hotmail.com if you would be interested in this method of getting hold of the book. We will begin the devotional in mid-October. God bless you this week! Cynthia.
