    Writing articles for Sabbath Keeper

Sabbath Keeper is an on-line magazine designed for Seventh-day Adventists. It is loyal to God. It is loyal to the members and administrators of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. And it is loyal to all Christians everywhere.

Articles in Sabbath Keeper are designed to "excel in uplifting the church" (1 Corinthians 14:12). They try to build up the church in various ways:

    • By devotional articles -- to bring us closer to God.
    • By theological articles -- to give us better knowledge of God.
    • By historical articles -- to help us better understand God's actions.
    • By evangelism articles -- to encourage us to share the knowledge of God.
You too can write for Sabbath Keeper. Your ideas for Sabbath Keeper articles can come from anywhere. Something you hear in a sermon may be so good you want others to benefit from it. You may find an idea or story in a book or magazine. Or your ideas may come from your own Bible study or own experience. Whatever the source, you should use your own words to express those ideas -- except in direct quotes.

Normally, articles for Sabbath Keeper carry the author's name at the end. And ideally, we want to put your email address at the end. This lets readers contact you to tell you how your article helped them. And it lets you clarify any problems the reader still has on your subject. However, if you do not want your email link with your article, please let us know.

Our articles are designed to be of lasting interest. Thus, we do not carry news on this page. (You can type in your news stories on the adventist.fm news page.) We also do not carry articles which are critical of this denomination or its leaders, nor articles critical of other denominations.

If you would like to write an article for Sabbath Keeper. Here are a few writing guidelines:

    • Keep most of your sentences shorter than 20 words.
    • Try to summarise the theme of your article in the first sentence.
    • Write your first sentence last.
    • Try to make the article's first 50 words particularly appealing. (Most people who stop reading an article will stop in the first 50 words. If you capture their attention for 50 words, you will probably keep them for the next 500 words.)
    • Keep paragraphs an average of about three sentences long.
    • Use a straightforward sentence structure. Don't deviate within a sentence then come back to continue the point being made earlier in the sentence.
    • And the most important of these guidelines: After you write your article, cut its length in half. Usually this process reduces your length without losing any important ideas. But it means people are far more likely to read what you write.

The normal procedure for submitting an article is to
email Adventist.fm with a brief summary of any article you want to write. We will then give you the go-ahead, and possibly suggest some concepts to include in your article.

Emailing us first can save you being disappointed. For example, we may already have an article being written on your subject. If you write it without contacting us first, the article with prior approval would normally be the one we include.

However, if you have an article already written, please email it to us. We still want to receive it, despite our guidelines.

When sending us articles, make the article the body copy of your Email. Do not send it as an attachment.

(In Windows, to paste your article into an email, mark the whole article in your word processor and "copy" it. Then go to the web message, click your mouse in the email message area, and hold down Control and type "V".)

Thank you for spending time at adventist.fm. We hope it has been and always will be an uplifting experience for you.

    May God bless you forever.
