The Path to the Heart

Abigail Finds the Way - 1 Samuel 25:2-42

And there was a man near to Carmel, whose name was Nabal. This man was very rich, having three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats. He also had a beautiful wife named Abigail, who was much more diplomatic than he was.

Now at the time of sheep shearing David sent ten young men to Nabal to ask food for David's men. After all, they had been the protectors for Nabal! . But Nabal said, "Who is David, anyway? He is nothing more than a servant, himself Do you really expect me to take my bread, and my water, and my meat that I have prepared for my shearers, and give it to someone like him!

When David heard this, he was really mad! His face grew red as he ordered his men, 'Gird ye on every man his sword. Nabal has some explaining to do!" So David took his army of four hundred men ,and set out to visit Nabal. But one of Nabal's men heard and told Abigail. So she quickly grabbed two hundred loaves of bread, and two huge bottles of juice, five sheep, five big baskets of corn, a hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred figs cakes. She loaded up the donkeys, and told her servants, “Run ahead of me, and tell David that I'm coming with loads of food! "

Now David had said, "What a fool is this man Nabal. We'll show HIM a thing or two!" But then he saw Abigail. This beautiful woman bowed low before David and said, "It's all MY fault If I had been there, this would not have happened. I must take better care of my husband, foolish as he is! Please take this food, and . I pray thee, forgive me. I know who you are, and I know that someday you will be king of Israel. And I would like for you not to have to look back with regret on this rash action which you anticipate.

Because Nabal alone is guilty. Why should you shed the blood of his servants, also?" Then David came to his senses, "What. a Beautiful woman," he thought to himself. "And what a lovely speech!" And David said to Abigail, "You know, you are right. I believe the Lord must have sent you I appreciate your kindness. We will all enjoy this food. And we will NOT go to fight against your husband!"

When Abigail arrived back at home, Nabal was engaged in a wild feast. "Where have you been?" he demanded.

"I don't think I should tell you now. But I will talk to you in the morning when your hangover wears off." she said.

The next morning Nabal demanded, "Where did you go yesterday?"

Since he continued to pressure her, Abigail replied, "I went to see David, and took him some food. He had 400 men in his army, and he was coming to kill you and all your servants."

Nabal gave a cry, a jerk, and his mouth fell open. He fell to the ground, as if stricken down by God. For ten days he lingered on, raving weird nonsense. And then he died. When David heard that Nabal was dead, he sent his condolences to Abigail, and said, "How would you like to come and live with me?" So Abigail took five servants with her, and went and became David's wife.

Abigail found the path to David’s heart by doing three things:

(1) She filled David's need,

(2) She took the blame on herself,

(3) Where David need reproof, she did it very gently
